The Mystery of the Sign on Your Hand and the Messiah
The phrase “sign on your hand” אות על ידך appears three times in the Torah in conjunction with Totafot טוטפות. What did HASHEM mean when He used this phrase? It is something on the hand. It has to do with POWER.
Rabbis have struggled with the meaning of the word phrase “sign on your hand” אות על ידך for centuries. They finally arrived at a “solution” by putting the Shema שמע and handwritten parchment scroll containing the three verses where the phrase appears in the Torah in a box and placing it on the hand.
They think this would cover all the bases.
Clues are given to the meaning of the phrase by examining the three Scriptures where the phrase “sign upon your hand” appears in the Torah התורה with the word Totafot. These are the only 3 times the phrase אות על ידך appears in the entire Tanach תנך.
The first time the phrase “sign on your hand” אות על ידך appears is in the second book of the Torah Exodus שמות. It is the command of HASHEM to redeem the firstborn. This command celebrates our deliverance from slavery in Egypt מצרים. HASHEM celebrates and commemorates His judgments on Pharaoh, Egypt, and their gods. He reserves the firstborn to Himself.
And it shall be when the LORD shall bring you into the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and to your fathers, and shall give it to you,
that you shall set apart unto the LORD all that opens the womb; every firstling that is a male, which are the offspring of an animal, shall be the LORD’S.
And every firstling of an ass you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and all the first-born of man among your sons shall you redeem.
And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying: What is this? that you shalt say to him: By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage;
and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast; therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that opens the womb, being males; but all the first-born of my sons I redeem.
And it shall be for a sign upon your hand, and for Totafot טוטפות between your eyes; for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.
The second time that the phrase “sign on your hand” אות על ידך appears is in the fifth book of the Torah Deuteronomy דברים. This is where the SHEMA שמע appears with the commandment of HASHEM to love Him with all our being and to hear His voice and to obey His commandments and follow His instructions that He gives.
Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one. .
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart;
and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
And you shalt bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for Totafot טוטפות between your eyes.
And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
The third time the phrase “sign on your hand” אות על ידך appears in the Torah is again in the fifth book Deuteronomy דברים. HASHEM gives a strict and a solemn prohibition against any form of idolatry. He also repeats the command to love Him with all our being.
Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
and the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD gives you.
Therefore shall you lay up these My Words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for Totafot טוטפות between your eyes
And you shall teach them your children, talking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
And you shall write them upon the door-posts of your house, and upon your gates;
that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.
The Hebrew word used for “sign” in the phrase “sign on your hand” is OTE אוֹת . OTE אוֹת means a sign, a wonder, a miracle. The Torah התורה uses the word to describe the heavenly bodies.
And God said: ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;
Genesis 1:14
HASHEM uses the word OTE אות to describe the two signs that He gave to Moses to demonstrate before the children of Israel so that they would believe that HASHEM had sent him.
And Moses answered and said: ‘But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice; for they will say: The LORD has not appeared unto you.’
And the LORD said to him: ‘What is that in your hand?’ And he said: ‘A rod.’
And He said: ‘Cast it on the ground.’ And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.
And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Put forth your hand, and take it by the tail–and he put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand—
that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.’
And the LORD said furthermore unto him: ‘Put now your hand into your bosom.’ And he put his hand into his bosom; and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow.
And He said: ‘Put your hand back into your bosom.–And he put his hand back into his bosom; and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.—
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe you, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither hearken unto your voice, that you shall take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land; and the water which you take out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.’
Exodus 4:1-9
HASHEM uses the word OTE אות again to refer to the miracles and wonders that He did in Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Go in unto Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these My signs in the midst of them;
Exodus 10:1
HASHEM also uses the word OTE אות to describe the blood of protection over the doors at Passover פסח. This is the blood of the lamb to protect the children of Israel from the destroyer when he went forth to kill the firstborn of Egypt.
Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household;
and if the household be too little for a lamb, then shall he and his neighbour next to his house take one according to the number of the souls; according to every man’s eating you shall make your count for the lamb.
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year; you shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats;
and you shall keep it unto the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at dusk.
And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it.
For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.
And the blood shall be to you for a token (sign) upon the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Again tn the last verses of the Torah התורה, the Torah uses the word OTE to refer to the great miracles that HASHEM did in the land of Egypt.
And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face;
in all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land;
and in all the mighty hand, and in all the great terror, which Moses wrought in the sight of all Israel
The phrase ‘sign upon your hand” אות על ידך are the three POWER GIFTS of the Messiah המשיח. These gifts are the gifts of healing, the gift of miracles, and the gift of faith. The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע exercised these gifts during his ministry to Israel on earth. They fit into the three categories of the Torah that are mentioned above. As the prophet said:
‘Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isaiah 53:1
The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע exercised these gifts during the three and one half years of his ministry to Israel when he was on this earth. Being the son of David, the son of Abraham, HASHEM sent him into this world to be His miraculous firstborn son. He turned the children of Israel from idolatry to the kingdom of HASHEM. After he had purged us from our sins by his blood which he shed after intense sufferings on the Roman (Babylonian) execution stake, his body was laid in the tomb for three days. After three days HASHEM raised him physically from the dead: Yeshua ישוע became the firstborn, the first fruit, of the resurrection of the dead.
As it is written in the second Psalm:
‘Truly I that have established My king upon Zion, My holy mountain.’
I will declare the decree: the LORD said unto me:
‘You are My son, this day have I begotten you.
Ask of Me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession.
Psalms 2:6-9
After the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע rose from the dead, he walked in his resurrection body for forty days and forty nights upon the mountains of Israel, appearing to great numbers of Israelis, and talking and eating with them. Then he ascended on high from the Mount of Olives outside of Jerusalem, and sat down on the right hand of HASHEM in the heavens. This fulfilled what was written in the Prophets:
You have ascended on high,
you have led captivity captive;
you have taken gifts to give among men,
yea, among the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell there.
The LORD declares to my lord: ‘Sit at My right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.’
Psalms 110:1
Among these gifts are the three power gifts of the Messiah המשיח which are the sign on the hand. These gifts are the “gifts” of healing, the gift of miracles, and the gift of faith.
The Messiah המשיח moved in these gifts before and after his resurrection.
These gifts are operated by the Spirit of G-d
This is what the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע did, as it is written in the prophets:
And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a twig shall grow forth out of his roots.
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
Isaiah 11:1-2
These three power gifts of the Messiah המשיח confirm the three commandments of the sign upon your hand אות על ידךfound in the three passages of the Torah התורה. They confirm the redemption of the firstborn. They confirm the commandments of HASHEM to love Him and to serve Him only. They confirm the prohibition against idolatry by helping to promote the total unreserved love for HASHEM. This fulfills the word spoken by the prophets:
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me.
Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in truth with My whole heart and with My whole soul.
The Messiah Yeshua ,המשיח ישוע who sits at the right hand of HASHEM, makes these three gifts available to those followers of Him who are wholly and completely submitted to Him. These gifts are operated by the Spirit of G-d רוח אלהים who dwells in these followers of the Messiah. The Holy Spirit teaches them as they follow His direction. There is no set pattern or formula for the natural mind and the five senses to operate in these gifts. They are learned by obedience to the direction of the Spirit of G-d רוח אלהים. Every circumstance can be different. The power of HASHEM will accomplish the will of HASHEM in every circumstance. The three power gifts of the Messiah המשיח are these:
- The Gifts of Healing
The power to heal all manner of sickness and disease, and the power to cast out demon spirits, freeing those who are afflicted by them.
- The Gift of Miracles
The power to accomplish things not possible in the natural course of nature
- The Gift of Faith
The ability to believe HASHEM to accomplish the impossible
The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע moved in these three power gifts during his three and one half years of his ministry to the children of Israel.
He moved in the gifts of healing:
And Yeshua went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people.
And the report of him went forth into all Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, afflicted with divers diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them.
And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from beyond the Jordan.
As it is written in the prophets:
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing; for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
Isaiah 35:5-6
Again it is written:
Who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives bread to the hungry. The LORD sets free the prisoners;
The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD raises up them that are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous;

Psalms 146:7-8
The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע moved in the power gift of miracles, the second of the power gifts, when he changed the water into wine at the wedding feast, and later on, when he fed 5,000 men (not including women and children) with five loaves of bread and two fishes, and had 12 full baskets of fragments that were left over from that great meal. These miracles are just a few of the miracles that he did in Israel.
The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישועmoved in the third power gift, the gift of faith, when he commanded the boisterous sea, and the tempestuous winds to cease their fury, and be quiet, and suddenly they ceased their raging, and there was a great calm.
The gift of faith is very valuable and it is worthy to be sought after. It was exercised by the great men of valor and the prophets in the former years in their generations. Here are some examples.
The gift of faith was imparted to Moses משה when he struck the rock the first time with his rod, and the flinty rock opened up and streams of water gushed out.
The gift of faith was imparted to Moses משה when he stretched forth his hand with the rod over the Red Sea, and HASHEM caused the waters of the sea to divide so that the children of Israel could go through the sea on dry land.
The gift of faith was imparted to Samson שמשון when he smote 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass.
The gift of faith was imparted to Joshua יהשוע when he commanded the sun to stand still over Gibeon גבעון and the moon to stand still in the valley of Ayalon עמק אילון .
The gift of faith was imparted to David דוד when he slew the mighty giant Philistine with one small stone.
The gift of faith was imparted to Elijah אליהו when he commanded rain to fall upon the land of Israel after three years of great drought.
The gift of faith was imparted to Elisha אלישע when he smote the Jordan River with the mantle of Elijah, and the waters opened up so that he could cross through it on dry land.
The gift of faith was imparted to Elisha אלישע when he fed 100 sons of the prophets with only 20 loaves of bread, and some bread was left over.
The gift of faith was imparted to Elisha אלישע when he raised the Shunammite woman’s son from the dead.
The gift of faith was imparted to the prophet Daniel דניאל when HASHEM sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths so that they did Daniel no harm while he was in their den.
These examples are only a few of the multitude of times that the gift of faith was imparted to men and women in the Tanach תנך who feared HASHEM.
These gifts are administered today by the Messiah Yeshua, and they are operated by HASHEM.
Their manifestation and facilitation is by the Spirit of G-d
A person must be under the authority of the Messiah המשיח and be led by the
Spirit of G-d רוח אלהים to operate in these gifts and to implement them.
These gifts also enhance the awareness of the Messiah and His imminent return to set up the kingdom of David.
The gifts also help prevent the person from engaging in the works of the flesh, which oppose the kingdom of HASHEM, and always end up in idolatry.
Walk in the Spirit of G-d רוח אלהים, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
