It is a tradition when a person puts on tephilin to repeat as a prayer the Scripture from the verses in Hosea 2:21-22.
And I will betroth you to Me forever,
and I will betroth you to Me with righteousness and with judgment
and with loving-kindness and with mercy.
And I will betroth you to Me with faith, and you shall know the Lord.
וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִי֙ בְּצֶ֣דֶק וּבְמִשְׁפָּ֔ט וּבְחֶ֖סֶד וּבְרַֽחֲמִֽים
וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה
When a Jewish person believes on the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע this scripture
Is a description of exactly what happens.
- HASHEM betroths you to Himself forever. וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם
- HASHEM betroths you to Himself in four parts:
Part I: In Righteousness בצדק
The perfect righteousness of the Messiah is transferred to you.
Your filthy garments that are stained and soiled with your sins and iniquities are removed,
and you are clothed with the white garments of the
Righteousness of HASHEM. This event is stated in the prophets and the Psalms.
Isaiah 64:5 For we all have become unclean,
and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. וַנְּהִ֚י כַטָּמֵא֙ כֻּלָּ֔נוּ וּכְבֶ֥גֶד עִדִּ֖ים כָּל־צִדְקֹתֵ֑ינוּ
Zechariah 3:1-5 And He showed me Joshua, the High Priest, standing before the angel of the Lord.
And satan was standing on his right, to accuse him. And the Lord said to satan:
The Lord shall rebuke you, O satan; and the Lord shall rebuke you,
He who chose Jerusalem.
Is this one not a brand plucked from the fire?
Now Joshua was wearing filthy garments and standing before the angel.
And he [the angel] answered and said to those standing before him,
“Take the filthy garments off him.”
And he said to him, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you,
and I have clad you with clean garments.”
And the angel said, “Let them put a pure miter on his head,”
and they put the pure miter on his head.
And they clothed him with garments while the angel of the Lord was standing.
וַיַּרְאֵ֗נִי אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֔וֹל עֹמֵ֕ד לִפְנֵ֖י מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהֹוָ֑ה
וְהַשָּׂטָ֛ן עֹמֵ֥ד עַל־יְמִינ֖וֹ לְשִׂטְנֽוֹ
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֗ן יִגְעַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֚ה בְּךָ֙ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן וְיִגְעַ֚ר יְהֹוָה֙ בְּךָ֔
הַבֹּחֵ֖ר בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם
הֲל֧וֹא זֶ֥ה֥ א֖וּד מֻצָּ֥ל מֵאֵֽשׁ
וִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֕עַ הָיָ֥ה לָב֖וּשׁ בְּגָדִ֣ים צוֹאִ֑ים וְעֹמֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֥י הַמַּלְאָֽךְ
וַיַּ֣עַן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אֶל־הָעֹֽמְדִ֚ים לְפָנָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הָסִ֛ירוּ הַבְּגָדִ֥ים הַצֹּאִ֖ים מֵעָלָ֑יו
וַ֣יֹּאמֶר אֵלָ֗יו רְאֵ֨ה הֶֽעֱבַ֚רְתִּי מֵֽעָלֶ֙יךָ֙ עֲוֹנֶ֔ךָ וְהַלְבֵּ֥שׁ אֹֽתְךָ֖ מַֽחֲלָצֽוֹת
וָֽאֹמַ֕ר יָשִׂ֛ימוּ צָנִ֥יף טָה֖וֹר עַל־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ
וַיָּשִׂימוּ֩ הַצָּנִ֨יף הַטָּה֜וֹר עַל־רֹאשׁ֗וֹ וַיַּלְבִּשֻׁ֙הוּ֙ בְּגָדִ֔ים וּמַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהֹוָ֖ה עֹמֵֽד
Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, with the robe of righteousness He has enwrapped me; like a bridegroom, who, as a Cohen, dons garments of glory, and like a bride, who adorns herself with her jewelry.
שׂ֧וֹשׂ אָשִׂ֣ישׂ בַּֽיהֹוָ֗ה תָּגֵ֚ל נַפְשִׁי֙ בֵּֽאלֹהַ֔י
כִּ֚י הִלְבִּישַׁ֙נִי֙ בִּגְדֵי־יֶ֔שַׁע
מְעִ֥יל צְדָקָ֖ה יְעָטָ֑נִי
כֶּֽחָתָן֙ יְכַהֵ֣ן פְּאֵ֔ר
וְכַכַּלָּ֖ה תַּעְדֶּ֥ה כֵלֶֽיהָ
Part II: In Judgment במשפט
The judgment of HASHEM that is upon you for your sins and your iniquities and your transgressions is removed because this terrible judgment was placed on the Messiah המשיח by HASHEM. All of these sins and iniquities and transgressions were cleansed away by his blood.
This is written by the prophet and the Torah.
Isaiah 53:6,11: We all like sheep have gone astray; we have every one of us turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid upon him the iniquity of us all.
כֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙ כַּצֹּ֣אן תָּעִ֔ינוּ אִ֥ישׁ לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ פָּנִ֑ינוּ וַֽיהֹוָה֙ הִפְגִּ֣יעַ בּ֔וֹ אֵ֖ת עֲוֹ֥ן כֻּלָּֽנוּ
He (the Messiah המשיח) shall see the travail of his soul, and be satisfied; with his knowledge My righteous servant shall make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities.
מֵֽעֲמַ֚ל נַפְשׁוֹ֙ יִרְאֶ֣ה יִשְׂבָּ֔ע בְּדַעְתּ֗וֹ יַצְדִּ֥יק צַדִּ֛יק עַבְדִּ֖י לָֽרַבִּ֑ים וַֽעֲוֹנֹתָ֖ם ה֥וּא יִסְבֹּֽל
Exodus 12:13 And the blood will be for you for a sign upon the houses where you will be, and I will see the blood and I will pass over you, and there will be no plague to destroy [you] when I smite the [people of the] land of Egypt.
וְהָיָה֩ הַדָּ֨ם לָכֶ֜ם לְאֹ֗ת עַ֤ל הַבָּתִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתֶּ֣ם שָׁ֔ם וְרָאִ֨יתִי֙ אֶת־הַדָּ֔ם וּפָֽסַחְתִּ֖י עֲלֵכֶ֑ם וְלֹא־יִֽהְיֶ֨ה בָכֶ֥ם נֶ֨גֶף֙ לְמַשְׁחִ֔ית בְּהַכֹּתִ֖י בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם
Part III: In Mercy בחסד
The Mercy of HASHEM is poured upon you who have been cleansed by the blood
of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע
Isaiah 55:3 Incline your ear and come to Me, hearken and your soul shall live, and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, the dependable and sure mercies of David.
הַטּ֚וּ אָזְנְכֶם֙ וּלְכ֣וּ אֵלַ֔י שִׁמְע֖וּ וּתְחִ֣י נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם וְאֶכְרְתָ֚ה לָכֶם֙ בְּרִ֣ית עוֹלָ֔ם חַסְדֵ֥י דָוִ֖ד הַנֶּאֱמָנִֽים
Part IV: In Compassions ברחמים
You will receive the outpouring and the infilling of the Spirit of HASHEM and you will
overflow with the joy, the power, and the anointing of the Spirit of HASHEM.
This is according to what King David said: You anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.
דִּשַּׁ֖נְתָּ בַשֶּׁ֥מֶן רֹ֜אשִׁ֗י כּוֹסִ֥י רְוָיָֽה
Also Aaron experienced this as it is written in Psalm 133: As the good anointing oil on the head runs down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron, which runs down to the borders of his garments; As the dew of Hermon which runs down on the mountains of Zion, because there the Lord commanded the blessing, life forever.
כַּשֶּׁ֚מֶן הַטּ֨וֹב עַל־הָרֹ֗אשׁ יֹרֵ֗ד עַל־הַזָּ֫קָ֥ן זְקַ֥ן אַֽהֲרֹ֑ן שֶׁ֜יֹּרֵ֗ד עַל־פִּ֥י מִדּוֹתָֽיו
כְּטַ֥ל חֶרְמ֗וֹן שֶׁיֹּרֵד֘ עַל־הַרְרֵ֪י צִ֫יּ֥וֹן כִּ֚י שָׁ֨ם צִוָּ֣ה יְ֖הֹוָה אֶת־הַבְּרָכָ֑ה חַ֜יִּ֗ים עַד־הָֽעוֹלָֽם
Then a marvelous thing happens to you because HASHEM
declares: “I will betroth you to me in faith.” וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה
This is the faith of the Messiah המשיח which is the faith of HASHEM as it is written in Psalm 33:4: “all His works are in faith כָל־מַֽ֜עֲשֵׂ֗הוּ בֶּֽאֱמוּנָֽה.”
This faith is transferred and infused into you so that you have the
dynamic faith of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע for the working of miracles. All things are possible and you have victory in life.
The final climax of everything is the last statement:
and you shall know HASHEM. וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה
You enter into an intense personal everlasting relationship with the G-d of our Fathers,
The G-d of Abraham, the G-d of Isaac, and the G-d of Jacob which lasts forever. This relationship with HASHEM grows daily and increases by stages. He teaches you His ways; you know them and you walk in them. You enjoy eternal life every day and you enter into the eternal glories of the kingdom of David.
This the purpose of HASHEM for Israel
when He says “I will betroth you to me forever.” וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם
