Prophecies in the Tanach תנך

That Were Fulfilled

At the First Coming of the Messiah

Part I: The Birth and Childhood of the Messiah

The Messiah המשיח  is the most important person in Jewish history and in world history.  Because he is the redeemer הגואל of Israel, and of all mankind, he must be described specifically and in detail by the prophets of Israel.  This is one of the tenets of the thirteen declarations or principles of Jewish faith The sixth principle, or declaration, states:   “I believe with perfect faith that all of the words of the prophets are truth.

Messiah המשיח is referenced not only by the prophets of Israel but also in the Torah   תורהand in the Writings  כתובים , that is, in the entire Tanach  תנך.

The following is a detailed delineation by the prophets of Israel, and also throughout the entire Tanach תנך of the life of the Messiah המשיח in the different stages תקופות  from birth to maturity.  This includes some of his accomplishments.  His primary objective or mitzvah מצוה from HASHEM was the Redemption of Israel, and through extension, the rest of the human race.  In light of this fact, these Hebrew Scriptures become clothed with magnificent importance and significance.

Bless HASHEM.

Part I:  The Birth and Childhood of the Messiah

Enmity: The seed of the woman against the seed of the serpent

And the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed be you more than all the cattle and more than all the beasts of the field; you shall walk on your belly, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.

And I shall place hatred between you and between the woman, and between your seed and between her seed. He will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

The head ראש or authority of the serpent, which is the devil, is destroyed by the seed of the woman.  A mention of Jacob עקב is hidden in this prophecy which came directly from the mouth of HASHEM.

The seed of the Woman המשיח will come from the lineage of Jacob and Judah

And I will extract seed from Jacob and from Judah, the heir of My mountains, and My elect shall inherit it, and My servants shall dwell there.

Isaiah 65:9

He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.

He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.

The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and peoples will be gathered to him.

Genesis 49:10

The Messiah המשיח will come from the seed of David.  David was the second king of Israel.  He was from the tribe of Judah.

For the sake of David Your servant, turn not away the face of Your anointed.

The Lord has sworn to David in truth, from which He will never turn back,

“Of the fruit of your body I shall cause to be seated upon your throne.”

I, too, shall make him a firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

I will forever keep My kindness for him, and My covenant will remain true to him.

And I shall make his seed endure forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens.

When your days are finished and you shall lie with your forefathers, then I will raise up your seed that shall proceed from your body after you, and I will establish his kingdom.

He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom FOREVER.

I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son; so that when he goes astray I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of Adam.

But My mercy shall not depart from him as I withdrew it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

And your house and your kingdom shall be confirmed FOREVER before you; your throne shall be established FOREVER.”

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

Now the Messiah המשיח was not Solomon, David’s son, because Solomon turned away from HASHEM during his later years, and turned to the idols of his foreign wives.  But Daniel the prophet gives the time of the appearing of the Messiah המשיח.

While I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I saw in the vision at first, approached me in swift flight about the time of the evening offering.

And he enabled me to understand, and he spoke with me, and he said, “Daniel, now I have come forth to make you skillful in understanding.

In the beginning of your supplications, a word came forth, and I have come to tell it, for you are beloved of the Lord; now contemplate the word and understand the vision.

Seventy weeks [of years] have been decreed upon your people and upon the city of your Sanctuary to terminate the transgression and to end sin, and to expiate iniquity, and to bring eternal righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophet, and to anoint the Holy of Holies.

And you shall know and understand that from the emergence of the word to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem until the Messiah the prince [shall be] seven weeks, and [in] sixty-two weeks it will return and be built street and moat, but in troubled times.

And after the sixty-two weeks, the Messiah the prince will be cut off, and he will be no more, and the people of the coming monarch will destroy the city and the Sanctuary, and his end will come about by inundation, and until the end of the war, it will be cut off into desolation.”

The next prophecy designates the city out of all the cities and villages of Israel, that the Messiah המשיח is to be born.  This city happens to be the city of David, where he grew up as a youth.

And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah-you should have been the lowest of the thousands of Judah-from you [he] shall emerge for Me, to be a ruler over Israel; and his goings forth have been of old, from everlasting.

Micah 5:1

Until I find a place for the Lord, dwellings for the Mighty One of Jacob.

Behold we heard it in Ephrath; we found it in the fields of the forest.

Psalm 132:5-6

So Rachel died, and she was buried on the road to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

Since the Messiah המשיח is the seed of the woman, he cannot come from the seed of a man.

How long will you hide, O backsliding daughter? For the Lord has created something new on the earth: a woman shall encompass man.

Therefore, the Lord, of His own, shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin who has never known a man shall conceive, and she shall bear a son, and she shall call his name Immanuel (G-d with us).

Now some say that the word “virgin” should not be used here because the word in Hebrew is  “the almah”  הָעַלְמָה  and not “the betoolah” .  However this objection does not stand because the Hebrew word almah in all cases refers to a woman who has never known a man.  This is apparent because the word is used for both Rebekah and also Miriam, the sister of Moses.

Behold, I am standing by the water fountain. When a maiden-almah  (Rebekah) comes out to draw [water], I will say to her, ‘Please, give me a little water to drink from your pitcher.’

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go!” So the girl-almah (Miriam) went and called the child’s mother.

Exodus 2:8

The Torah does not use the word almah to refer to a prostitute, fornicator, or adulteress who has transgressed the precepts of the Torah.  Both Rebekah and Miriam were virgins when the Hebrew word almah עלמה was used by the Torah instead of the word betoolah בתולה when the Torah refers to them.  They were both holy women.

Next we will look at the NAME of the Messiah המשיח.  This name was kept a mystery until it was revealed by HASHEM.

Who ascended to heaven and descended? Who gathered wind in his fists? Who wrapped the waters in a garment? Who established all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what is the name of his son, if you know?

Proverbs 30:4

The Messiah המשיח  was named by HASHEM when he was formed in the womb by HASHEM.

Hearken, you islands, to me, and listen closely, you nations, from afar; the Lord called me from the womb, from the innards of my mother He mentioned my name.

Isaiah 49:1

And now, the Lord, Who formed me from the womb as a servant to Him, said to bring Jacob back to Him, and Israel shall be gathered to Him, and I will be honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God was my strength.

And He said, “It is too light for you to be My servant, to establish the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the besieged of Israel, but I will make you a light of nations (gentiles), so that My Salvation – Yeshua – shall be until the end of the earth.”

So said the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, about him who is despised of men, about him whom the nation abhors, about a slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and rise, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, for the sake of the Lord Who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, and He chose you.”

Isaiah 49:5-7

The name of the Messiah המשיח was revealed by the Angel Gabriel, the same angel who was sent by HASHEM to Daniel the prophet to reveal the time of the coming of the Messiah המשיח.

Now I was still speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and casting my supplication before the Lord my God about the mount of the Sanctuary of my God.

While I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I saw in the vision at first, approached me in swift flight about the time of the evening offering.

And he enabled me to understand, and he spoke with me, and he said, “Daniel, now I have come forth to make you skillful in understanding.”

Daniel 9:20-22

And the angel answering said to him, “I am Gabriel גבריאל   who stands in the presence of HASHEM.  And I am sent to you, to give to you these glad tidings.”

Luke 1:19

“And you shall call his name Yeshua ישוע  for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21

And behold you (Miriam) shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Yeshua

And he shall be great, and shall be called the son of the Highest, and the LORD G-D  shall give to him the throne of his father David: he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Luke 1:31-33

The Messiah

is taken by G-d out of the womb, from the belly.

For You drew me from the womb; You made me secure on my mother’s breasts.

Upon You I was cast from birth; you are my G-d from my mother’s belly.

We know that the Messiah המשיח would spring from the seed of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, according to the word of the prophet of Israel:

For a child has been born to us, a son given to us, and the government authority is upon his shoulder: and he shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty G-d, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

To him who increases the authority, and for peace without end, on David’s throne and on his kingdom, to establish it and to support it with justice and with righteousness; from now and to eternity, the zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:5-6

Kings will come and offer gifts at the birth and during the young childhood

of the Messiah המשיח.

The kings of Tarshish and the isles shall return tribute; the kings of Sheba and Seba shall approach with a gift.

Psalm 72:10

Herod, the king at Jerusalem, will seek to destroy the Messiah המשיח by killing all the children two years old and younger in the environs around Bethlehem.

So says the Lord: A voice is heard on high, lamentation, bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, she refuses to be comforted for her children for they are not.

The Messiah המשיח is taken to Egypt to escape the sword of Herod.  There he grows up for a time, until after Herod’s death, when HASHEM brings him back into the land of Israel.

For, when Israel was young, I loved him, and from Egypt I called My son.

Hosea 11:1

The scepter had departed from Judah.  Herod had taken power from the Sanhedrin so that they could no longer put a man or a woman to death.  The Torah had said this would happen just before the coming of the Messiah המשיח.

The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him will be a gathering of peoples.

Genesis 49:10

The Messiah המשיח grows up in the city of Nazareth נצרת

in Galilee of Israel, away from the ravages of the kings in Jerusalem.  He is therefore called a Netzer נצר.  This is also because he springs from the root of Jesse, the father of David the king of Israel.

And a shoot shall spring forth from the stem of Jesse, and a sprig (Netzer) shall sprout from his roots.

Isaiah 11:1

The Messiah המשיח is also called a Nazer because the unlimited anointing of the Spirit of G-d rests upon him because he is the son of David, the Messiah המשיח of Israel.

There I shall cause David’s horn to sprout; I have set up a lamp for My anointed.

His enemies I shall clothe with shame,

and upon him his crown of anointing will bud and flower in shining beauty.

From this Psalm it is also evident that the Messiah המשיח is given the name of a Tsemach צמח, or a tender plant.

And you shall speak to him, saying, “So said the Lord of Hosts, saying: Behold a man whose name is the Shoot or Tender Branch-Tsemach צמח, who will spring up Yetsmach   יצמחout of his place and build the Temple of the Lord.

And he shall build the Temple of the Lord, and he shall bear glory. And he shall sit and rule on his throne, and as a priest shall he be on his throne. And a counsel of peace shall be between them.

But the beauty of the Messiah המשיח was not easily seen by the natural eye, as the Prophet Isaiah tells us:

Who has believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

And he came up like a sapling before Him, and like a root from dry ground;  he had no beauty nor comeliness; and we saw him that he had no handsome appearance that we should desire him.

Isaiah 53:1-2

However the SPIRIT of HASHEM רוח יה  was upon the Messiah המשיח without measure, beyond anything the prophets, kings, or cohenim (priests)  had ever experienced.  The Prophet Isaiah saw the unlimited power and presence of the SPIRIT of HASHEM רוח יה   upon the Messiah המשיח:

And a shoot shall spring forth from the trunk of Jesse, and a sapling-netzer000 shall sprout from his roots.

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and heroism, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

And he shall be animated by the fear of the Lord, and neither with the sight of his eyes shall he judge, nor will he reprove after the hearing of his ears.

And he shall judge the poor justly, and he shall chastise with equity the humble of the earth,

and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth

and with the breath of his lips he shall put the wicked to death.

And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle of his reins.

Isaiah 11:1-5

The Messiah משיח as he was growing up, was continuously cleansing his ways by the Word of HASHEM.

In what manner should a youth purify his way? To observe according to Your word.

With all my heart I searched for You; do not cause me to stray from Your commandments.

In my heart I hid Your word, in order that I should not sin against You.

Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes.

With my lips I recited all the judgments of Your mouth.

With the way of Your testimonies I rejoiced as over all riches.

Concerning Your precepts I shall converse, and I shall look at Your ways.

With Your statutes I shall occupy myself; I shall not forget Your speech.

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע for his Bar Mitzvah,

appeared in the Temple in Jerusalem  בית המקדש בירושלים, and reasoned with the sages.  They were astonished at his wisdom.

From all my teachers I gained understanding, for Your testimonies are my conversation.
